At least 17 illegal immigrants from Ethiopia were yesterday arrested in Mvomera District, Morogoro Region. They are said to have been found hiding in some over grown bushes on the town’s outskirts.

This is the third time such a large number of illegal immigrants have been arrested in the region within the scope of a few months.

16 illegal immigrants were also arrested in Morogoro in October found hidden in a lorry delivering lime endangering their lives from the potentially poisonous lime and already some of them were found suffocated.

Confirming the arrests, Senior Assistant Officer for the Immigration department in the region, Msafiri Shomari, said the 17 were arrested following a tip from a ‘citizen of goodwill.’

It is believed that the Ethiopians entered the country from the neighbouring Kenya enroute to South Africa via Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
